Shooting at Howe Park Wounds 4 Shot in Sacramento's Arden-Arcade

Sacramento authorities are probing a shooting that took place Saturday night April 18 at Howe Community Park as authorities were dispersing an unlawful assembly of hundreds of attendees.

Background

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies initially responded to the Arden-Arcade park shortly before 6:30 PM on April 18 after obtaining information of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Shortly after, a follow-up call was made regarding a reported physical confrontation happening inside the park.

A sheriff's airship searched from above but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Even so, it was evident that an enormous crowd had come together at the location click here in an unauthorized manner.

When the Shots Rang Out

Responding units began the process of clearing the park by positioning themselves around the crowd and broadcasting over loudspeakers telling attendees to vacate the area. Approximately 15 minutes were allowed for people to comply.

As the crowd was being cleared that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition were discharged. The rapid succession of shots sent the crowd running in all directions. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies at once began identifying shooting victims.

Four Gunshot Victims

Altogether, four individuals were located with gunshot injuries. The shooting victims — comprising three men and one woman each reported to be in their 20s — were rushed to area medical facilities. Doctors and nurses confirmed that two were treated for serious injuries, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one person's injuries were considered minor. In a positive development, each of the four victims was stable.

Sacramento fire crews provided support and helped care for the four victims prior to hospital transport.

What Investigators Found

Most of the gunfire was determined to have happened near Cottage Way close to the Home Depot store at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators identified extra shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Bullet holes were identified in the iron perimeter fence alongside the Home Depot. This evidence pointed to that a second shooter had been firing southward from along Cottage Way toward the Home Depot building and parking lot. The Home Depot was locked down while law enforcement worked the area. CSI units alongside detectives kept processing evidence late into the evening.

Arrests Made

Reports confirmed through law enforcement radio communications revealed that a Kia vehicle was intercepted in the Solano County area. Four occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sheriff's units were dispatched to Solano County to bring the suspects back for formal questioning. Surveillance footage confirmed that there were two gunmen.
